Splogs and Spammers

Added on March 22nd, 2007

According to a recent study, most online free blog hosting services actually host blogs that are used just for spamming, also known as splogs. And this isn’t even any particular group of hosters, even Google’s Blogspot is basically one big pile of spam blogs. It’s not as bad as blogsharing, or sitegr, which are basically nearing(or already are) 100%.

This is just nuts, so much money is probably spent on hosting all those blogs, I wonder why they don’t anything about them? Or maybe google actually profits from the splogs?

While we are on topic, I noticed yet another part of my site getting spammed. This time it was the custom signs section. So I had to go clean it up, and code up some anti-spam measures. Very annoying and not exactly something I’d love to spend my free time on. Luckily enough, I think that that was the last user submittable form that wasn’t yet protected from spammers in some way or form.

A Softer World

“a softer world” is a webcomic, but not just any webcomic. It’s one of the best, and most importantly smartest webcomics out there. While most webcomics deal with silly things, that are mostly just plain dumb, a softer world is very different. It’s smart, touching, and stylistically very well done. Probably my favourite webcomic right now.

a softer world - failing mark

There are no main characters, or storylines in “a softer world”, it isn’t there to tell any particular story, so you get surprised with something brilliant every time they upload a new strip. The comic is done by Emily and Joey. Highly recommended and well worth the read.

March Blog Updates

Added on March 20th, 2007

Had some extra free time today so decided to work some more on improving(hopefully it’s improving) the blog. Most noticeable changes are probably those on the front page. The way that the categories are now setup in a “tag cloud”, I always thought that the old way of showing them one per line took up too much space, and looked very boring as well. So I changed it to a “tag cloud”, which basically is a list of all categories thrown together in one pot. The bigger the text is, the more entries in that category there are.

Secondly I removed the top google adsense ads, and I’m thinking about some new placements for the ads anyway, seeing that they basically being in maybe six clicks per month anyway, and that just isn’t worth of having them here in the first place. Will probably decide on this over the next few days, was maybe thinking about having one of those 460×80 blocks after the first blog post. Any suggestions?

Thirdly, you can now subscribe to receive email notifications of any comments that have been posted in any of the entries that you have subscribed for. So if you want to find out about any follow up replies, just tick the small check box under the text area, and you’ll receive an email as soon as a comment is posted after yours.
