So I watched Atlantis – The Return Part 2 a few days ago, while it’s a pretty good episode over all, one thing has been nagging me ever since, and probably will for a while. It’s Teyla Emmagan, one of the characters that I actually like in Atlantis, even though she was labelled as the Teal’c of Atlantis, which is fair enough, there are quite a few similarities between the two characters. But there are also many things that set them apart, and a female character never hurts(I bet Star Trek fans will have something to say about this and Voyager).

That is what has been nagging me. Time and time again the producers and writers love doing things to characters that don’t really make sense. And they do it to appeal to a wider audience, so you must have super stunts, and all sorts of action sequences with unrealistic and “rad” moves. First we find out that Teyla happens to be an opera singer and now she turns out to be a Trinity from the Matrix trilogy re-incarnate? Do we really need this?

While I don’t really have anything against good action sequences. I actually love them, but do them when it makes sense, and how it makes sense. What we see here doesn’t build her character at all, it demolishes it, as it stands right now, I wouldn’t really care if they got rid of that character in the next episode, and bring in someone new.
The writers and producers should really watch some BSG and bring in some character development from there. I really wish there was more character development in Atlantis. They don’t have to turn it into a scifi drama show, but some character development would go a long way to improve the show.
